Today I found an interesting software called VirtualBox. VirtualBox is a software that able to run other OS within an OS. As example you can run Linux OS while you run Windows Vista.

Virtualbox is available for Windows, Linux, Macintosh and OpenSolaris and with it, you can run Windows, DOS, Linux and OpenBSD.

I have tried VirtualBox on my Windows Vista and run Knoppix (which is Linux 2.6 in VirtualBox). I used the live cd feature. So in VirtualBox, you can also choose to run from an harddisk or ISO files.

It’s just like switching OS. If I start Knoppix within VirtualBox, I wouldn’t be able to use Windows Vista until I swith to Windows Vista again using the switch button (default is the right Ctrl button but you can change it you don’t have right Ctrl button like me).

I really like VirtualBox and if you like to use other OS or want to try then you can use VirtualBox, so you dont even have to install (in case like Linux live cd feature).

Read more about VirtualBox at VirtualBox.org

I was trying to download pictures from a Picasa Web Album but there was no option to download any images and I want to download all the images. So I search in Google how I can download pictures from a Picasa Web Album.

I found several softwares that able to download fro Picasa Web Albums but I only like two of them:

1. PicasaWeb Downloader - (My rating: 2/5)
- Software homepage and download

PicasaWeb Downloader is a software that run in ms-dos/command prompt. I was able to download entire album with it. You can also define the download folder.

The only thing I missed with this software is the Graphical User Interface. It’s really annoying working with ms-dos/command prompt because I normally don’t use ms-dos/command prompt. Also you can’t choose which picture you want to download, it download the entire album.

On the site of the this software you will be able to download version 1.1. This version doesn’t support Picasa url that don’t use .com. Also if you want to download a private/hidden album, it doesn’t support an authetication key with dash(-) in it.

There is a patch made for the problems above at http://cvs.pld-linux.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/SOURCES/PicasaWebDownloader-url.patch#rev1.1. I think you will first need to edit Program.cs and re-compile the software.

2. Picasa Webalbums Assistant (My rating: 4/5)
- Software homepage and download

Picasa Webalbums Assistant is the beter software than the first software. It’s a multi platform software (so you can run it in Windows and Linux). To use this software you will need Java 5.5 or greated installed.

This software is also much easier to use because it use Graphical User Interface. You can choose the picture before you download and you can also choose the download folder and you can download both public or private/hidden album.

With this software you can download private/hidden album with authetication key that has dash(-) in it. But the same as PicasaWeb Downloader version 1.1. This software doesn’t support Picasa url that don’t use .com.

I hope this wil help you if you want to download pictures from Picasa Web Albums without Picasa.
